Emeralds, Diamond's Best Friend

Emeralds Diamonds

The James Bond movie said that diamonds are forever. But so are emeralds. Fact is more people seem to prefer emeralds these days than diamonds. Diamonds are simply too expensive, and so they are reserved for more special occasions.

Emeralds and diamonds are both earthly minerals. They form through an extremely long process called mineralization under the Earth’s soil, speculated by scientists to take anywhere between 1 billion to 3.3 billion years. This corresponds to more or less 25% and 75% of the Earth’s age respectively. That’s how precious these metals are.

The emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl. The mineral is distinguished by its color, green, which is caused by trace amounts of vanadium or chromium. Emeralds are brittle compared to other minerals. The world emerald came from the Semitic word izmargad, meaning “green”.

Emerald is important in modern culture. It is the traditional birthstone for the month of May, and the traditional gemstone for the astrological signs Cancer, Taurus, and sometimes Gemini.

About anniversaries, emerald is considered, in some cultures, the traditional gift for a couple’s 55th wedding anniversary. The 20th and 35th anniversaries are also endowed with emeralds as wedding gifts.

The diamond is a more precious mineral. In mineralogy, the carbon atoms of a diamond are arranged in a face centered cubic structure called diamond lattice, making it the second sturdiest form of carbon behind graphite. Diamonds are as rare as they are valuable. They are also worth a lot, if not the most expensive, in the gemstone market.

Diamonds are so popular these days those countries rich in diamond mines use the proceeds from diamond sales to finance their military operations, particularly the West African and central African countries. So the United Nations was prompted to adopt the Kimberley Process in 2002. In a way, the move was successful. Today only 2% to 3% of conflict or blood diamonds, just about, make it to the international market.

Emeralds and diamonds are two very different mineral stones, okay, but you can’t separate one from the other completely.

For one thing, emeralds and diamonds are bound by the fact that diamonds may be cut and fashioned like an emerald, what they call emerald cut diamonds. This helps keep the cost of the diamond down to manageable prices. It’s great for rings and earrings and other types of diamond jewelries.
